Science Test Canceled!  Yay!!

Dear students and parents,

I am canceling the science test for this first unit.  I am working with a new science curriculum and I do not think I did an adequate job teaching the material in this first unit.  I will do a better job of preparing you now that I am getting a clearer understanding of the goals of this curriculum.  The result will be that I will be able to test the students over the material.  But I will never test my students over material that I have not taught adequately.  So, rest easy in that there is no science test this week.  But get ready for better and better science lessons and for fair testing over the lessons I give you!  I love all of my students in 5c, and thank you again, parents, for loaning your wonderful kids to me each day!

World Lakes Study Guide

Your test will be on Wednesday, August 26, 2015. The test will be comprised of 15 multiple- choice questions, five true/ false questions, knowing all of the locations of the lakes and one short- answer question.

Directions: Answer each question in complete sentences. The more accuracy and detail you provide, the better you will do on your test.

1. Where is Lake Tanganyika? What does it provide for its people? What is significant about its shape?

Lake Tanganyika is a long lake and touches the boundaries of four different countries- Zaire, Tanzania, Burundi, and Zambia.  It provides its people water, food, and all that they need to make a living.  It’s long and narrow shape is significant because it is located in a rift valley which is a long narrow depression where tectonic plates have shifted leaving a place for water to gather.

2. Where is Lake Victoria? How did it gain its name? What surrounds Lake Victoria and why are they important?

Lake Victoria, named after Queen Victoria (queen of England in the 1800’s, when the first Europeans came to the lake), is located in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.  It is surrounded by game reserves or areas set aside by the government where animals are protected from hunters.

3. Where is Lake Chad? How is it different from the other lakes on the same continent?\

Lake Chad is shared by several countries.  Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon each have a part of the shore of Lake Chad.  It is different from other lakes because it is very shallow.

4. Where is Lake Titicaca? What surrounds the lake? What is life like around the lake?

Lake Titicaca is on the border of Peru and Bolivia in South America and is shared by both countries.  Along the shore of Lake Titicaca are ancient ruins of a civilization whose people lived hundreds of years before the Inca Indians!  Life around the lake is agricultural.  It involves the raising of llamas for wool and use in working the land.  The people grow hundreds of varieties of potatoes.  The people around the lake also wear and sell colorful wool sweaters, scarves, hats and blankets.

5. Where is Lake Maracaibo? What surrounds the lake? How is it different from the other lake on the same continent?

Lake Maracaibo is in Venezuela.  It is different than Lake Titicaca in that it is not really a lake, because it is not completely surrounded by land.  Instead, it is a gulf.  A gulf is a part of an ocean extending into land.

6. Where are the Great Lakes? List a few facts about the lakes? How are they connected (if they are connected)?

The great lakes are in the country of Canada and in the United States. In the U.S. they are in several states.   These include: Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.  They are connected by canals (waterways made by people) and boats use locks (parts of canals that have gates for lowering and raise the water level)
7. Where is the Aral Sea? What is unique about it?
The Aral Sea is found on the border of Kazahkstan and Uzbekistan.  It is unique in that the lake is shrinking.   The volume of the Aral seas has decreased by 75 percent in the last few decades.

8. Where is the Caspian Sea? What is unique about it? How was it used for trade?
The Caspian Sea is in Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, and Kazakhstan.  It is unique in that it is a salt water lake.  A lake has slat water if its water evaporates more quickly than rivers can bring in new water.  When water evaporates, it leaves behind salts and minerals.  People travel across it from Asia into Europe and back for trade and today it is found to be rich in oil.

9. Where is Lake Baikal? How is it different from any other lake in the world?
Lake Baikal is a very deep lake located in Siberia.  It is incredibly clear and it is the deepest lake in the world.   In this one lake there is enough water to fill all five of the great lakes until they overflow.

Mistakes for you to find in the answer key:
 - "It’s long and narrow shape" should be "Its long and narrow shape"
- "A lake has slat water" sould be "A lake has salt water"
- "enough water to fill all five of the great lakes" should be "enough water to fill all five of theGreat Lakes"

*You must also know all of the vocabulary words in the chapter.

Mr. Lehrer’s 5th Grade Class! Week of August 17-21, 2015

I hope that your child had an excellent first week of school! If you have any questions regarding the classroom, feel free to email me.

This year the students will have a 30 minute Lyceum (Study Hall/ Reading Enrichment) time four days a week (not Wednesday) from 2:50- 3:20. This time will be used for various activities including, but not limited to: reading instruction (if deemed necessary), homework/study hall, silent reading, read alouds, and tutoring (if deemed necessary). This will give more opportunity for other after-school activities for the students.

Curriculum Night is approaching quickly! On Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:30-8pm, parents of 3rd- 5th graders are invited to their child’s classroom to learn about the daily routine, classroom expectations, and yearly curriculum. On that evening, we ask that you don’t bring your children. Thank you for your understanding.

Reminders:
  • The students need their own copy of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis
  • If you are coming on campus to volunteer, you must sign in with the front desk. You must also have fingerprint clearance through Great Hearts.
  • All Wednesdays are early release days. Archway students will be dismissed at 12:30pm. We will not have lunch on Wednesdays. Those students who stay after school for clubs or Athenaeum may bring their own lunch to eat.  If you plan on having your child stay after school in study club, or any other offered club, you must sign up and pay for these clubs. Please check the weekly Headmaster Updates for more information.

Class Wish List: Large dispenser of hand sanitizer, anti-bacterial wipes, and red pencils. Fulfilling these wishes will really help to make our classroom run smoothly.

Paper Towel/ Kleenex Rotation:

Every month, a new group of families will be responsible for bringing in one box of Kleenex and one roll of paper towels. This will be announced in the weekly newsletter. The Month of September will be any family with a last name starting with the letter A or B. Please be aware that you may be asked to send in these materials more than once this year. Thank you!
